A Gateway device in networking is a device that connects two or more networks that use different protocols. It translates data from one protocol to another so that it can be understood by the rest of the network. Gateways are typically used to connect a local area network (LAN) to a wide area network (WAN), such as the Internet. For example, a gateway can be used to connect a LAN using the Ethernet protocol to a WAN using the IP protocol. The gateway translates Ethernet data into IP data so it can be sent over the WAN.
