Twyla, a beautiful, bright and understanding young woman is the daughter of Sihtric Kjartansson and his wife Sigdeflaed and she loves her father and mother more than anything! At the age of just 16, she travels a lot with her father and his Lord! Finan and Osferth, her father's two other friends, are Twyla's protectors and 'big brothers'!

She loves Uhtred, Finan and Osferth and they are family! Uhtred occasionally tells her stories and Finan ruins the moment with an inappropriate joke. But that is part of life in Coccham! Behind them lie countless battles and losses of loved ones, but when a new wave of grief and loss threatens to tear Uhtred's life apart, Twyla makes it her mission to rebuild him!

Uhtred would never admit it out loud, but he was grateful for Twyla and he saw her as a second daughter! Stiorra, Twyla and young Uhtred grew up together and it was very sad for the 3 of them when one day they were separated from each other! When one day the Battle of Tettenhall was imminent and Brida, Uhtred's first great love, was captured by the Welsh, Twyla and Sigdeflaed eagerly awaited the return of Sihtric and the others!

So it wasn't long before the next disaster befell the small group! Sigdeflaed had warned Sihtric not to take Twyla with him, but he was stubborn and insisted on having his daughter with him!

So when they rode past Hæsten and his men, Hæsten told them about a new Dane and left the boys and father Pyrlig hanging from a tree to die! Twyla, Lady Ælswith, the boy Æthelstan and Stiorra were captured by Hæsten's men and taken to Winchester to this said new Dane...

Eadith, who had travelled with the boys and Twyla, was their only hope!

Will she manage to free them in time?
