"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson First released in The New Yorker in 1948, The Lottery is a masterwork of grim atmosphere and troubling themes. The story of a small village lottery -- the winner of which will be stoned to death -- it almost singlehandedly created the modern concept of gothic horror thanks to its gloomy atmosphere and use of thought-provoking, disturbing irony.

I woke up to a sound. It wasn't loud, nor urgent, just a soft, deliberate knock against wood. The kind that lingers, waiting to be acknowledged. Knock, knock. The room was dark, except for the faint glow of streetlights bleeding through the curtains. Everything looked the same: the walls, the ceiling, the bed I was lying on. Nothing was out of place. And yet, something felt wrong. Knock, knock. The sound wasn't coming from the front door. It was closer. Much closer. Right outside my bedroom. The room stayed still, wrapped in darkness, thick and suffocating, with only the tick of the clock echoing through the quiet. I didn't move, didn't turn on the light. I just lay there, listening - letting the sound drift through the rhythm of my breath. I had locked the front door. My smart lock made sure no one could enter without the code. So then... who was standing out there?
