Eve Rios spends her days as a ride-share driver in San Diego the way most recent college graduates would: browsing the internet, snacking in her car, and hoping someone she drives will notice her parents on the missing persons flyers she keeps in her back seat. Meanwhile, everyone in California is going nuts for the roll out of the SAFE and FREND initiative. Robots. Robot nurses, teachers, aid workers, and cops. The cold case of her missing parents is finally picked up, but the one who notices the people on the flyers is an unmarked runaway robot.

Avis leads a normal life, as far as she can remember. Her life at her foster home is all that she knows. Her life before the night she was struck by a car is a mystery. But she tries her best to get by and live around the amnesia and narcolepsy that plagues her life. Suddenly, her dreams become stranger, more familiar. Memories. It's a welcome surprise at first, until dreams tell her something terrible. There are people looking for her. They want her, or rather, the part of her that makes her special.
