Terncrest is wilting. He feels like a dying creature being picked at by vultures; it wants to try and escape its cruel fate, but the birds of prey peck and peck, stripping away flesh and energy.

Terncrest wants to escape; wants his freedom. But he's stuck with a love in his Clan who's controlling and possessive, and his friends who don't seem to realise how much he's hurting, only seeing how fortunate he is that the clan deputy is his mate.

But soon, the opportunity for an escape arrives in the form of a storm that ends up sweeping him away to the Northern Kingdoms. 

When he's washed up on shore by the paws of the valley cats by the coast, Terncrest discovers there's more to life than blindly obeying orders.
