The world didn't used to be this way. Finn remembers the days when he could see the grass on the ground and run around in the light of the sun. Now each day is dark and cold and no one in the province knows why. The people in the town are slowly dwindling and supplies are hard to come by.
This year, his best friend Thane's father was chosen to scavenge. None of the fathers in the province ever return from scavenging, but it's their only hope of discovering what lies beyond their borders. However, his father won't be the only one disappearing into the woods this time.
