Kaeya is in debt do to him not having a well paid job and him being an alcoholic, he sees a newspaper article about a competition open to the public to become a royal due to the kingdom of Khaenri'ah not finding the rightful prince yet. He realizes that if he makes it to the top ten contestants and drops out he will get a cash prize the lower the number gets, he applies and gets excepted and escorted to the castle. During his stay he finds out many secrets and develops some of his own as he falls in love with his servant Albedo who is willing to do anything to help him
