My name is Derek Fields. According to the rest of my schoolmates, I have it all- money, good looks and a loving family. I am the captain of the football team and I had a line of girls waiting to be my girlfriend. I could choose anyone. But there is one problem.

Melissa Howard was my best friend until high school. I became the jock while she decided to fade into the background and become a 'nerd'. She sees me as nothing but someone she tutors in history. Oh,and someone who was her friend. No more.

There wasn't really anything all that special about me. I considered myself an average person with average looks. That being said, I also considered myself a very gaunt person. I was sort of a nerd. Not like a big 'ooooh, look at him, with his glasses, pocket protector and retainer', I of course had never worn any of those things. I'm a quiet type of nerd . The corner of his mouth tilts upward slightly. I smile again. A smile!? A tiny one, but still. "Hm. So I got you to smile, that's progress, yeah? Can I get your name now?"
