Leila Hawthorne came from Pearl city in what's left of Hawaii. Eventually, due to both costs and environmental factors, what was left of her family moved to Waimea on the big Hawaiian island. Coming from a small family with little wealth, it was hard to get anywhere in life. So, Leila took a risk by putting all her eggs in one basket and applied for the Avatar Program. She was a skilled linguist and pathologist. And there was a problem the RDA wanted her to solve, something that required both skills.

While she was taking the risk, so was her younger brother, Kylan Hawthorne. He was already a geneticist with the RDA on earth. He was also a skilled ecologist.

With both of them set to become promising avatar drivers and an asset of the science team, Leila discovers a plot of malicious intent.
