Dakota is fine when it comes to making decisions, usually there's no pressure. But this time it's different. This summer Dakota has to decide which one of her newly divorced parents she'll be staying for her senior year of highschool. Her uptight, controlling mother in Ogunquit Maine? Or her irresponsible, unhealthy father in her hometown, Connecticut. But how will she know if she wants to stay in Maine if she's never been there. That's when Dakota finds out her summer will go a little bit more different than she planned. She has to spend the summer with her mother in Maine to see if she likes the area, then decide who she wants to live with. Dakota just wants to get through the summer in this unfirmiliar town. But as new friendships begin to form, her life begins to change.

It's summer - the end of my first year of college. And I am home again, more than a little worse for the wear. College hadn't gone how I had expected it to go. After two years of the grind to get in, I thought I would find the kind of magic I saw in American high school movies, which I had been denied of in school - late nights, parties, wild adventures with whacky best friends, romance.... everything one is told is supposed to happen in one's teenage years. After two years of watching my classmates grow up and enter this world, I thought it was my turn, now. I thought my college life would be like a coming-of-age movie. But in reality? It wouldn't make a good story, of any kind - not even a sad one. The only thing I found were shiftless friends, stifling academic pressure and heartbreak. No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy. Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either. It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds. ------------------------------------------ This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. As I transcribe it here, I have tried to update it a bit and give the characters/story more depth than what I had when I was younger. Hopefully it all gets pulled together!
