Life couldn't be more planned out for Callie. All she was going to do was continue working, live in the same small town she grew up in, and love animals. Even though her family doesn't completely approve, she would never leave her small town. She never expected anything to change and she was okay with that.
Neither had Brent. Especially when he was on military leave. He just wanted to leave to go back to his marine buddies. They needed him, but now so does Callie.

Dae had always pushed Dustin away when he wanted to get closer. On the run up to Valentine's day Dustin has a grand plan in which he hopes Dae manages to see how he feels. Presents appear in her locker, her dad gets back from deployment with a companion she was certain was not breathing and then a gift bag which Smoke doesn't react to which makes her suspicious.
