Chicago, the Windy City. That of crime, of violence, of corruption. The truth is much more sinister than Esmerelda thought. Much more brutal that she believed it to be. Despite it, women are being brutally murdered, slaughtered as a demonstration of relalitiation and defiance not only toward authorities and higher ups, but for those who truly have full control of the city.
Esmerelda Reyes, daughter of the governor of Illinois, has just earned an internship at the Chicago Tribune, the newspaper center of chicago. Her dream to become a crime journalist is so close to becoming true, all that's left to do is to secure her place as an official member by competing against the rest of the competition at tribune. With the recent murders within the city, Esme seeks out to find out the truth in hopes this will secure her place. But things are far from what they seem, with her family name holding prominence within the elite families of the city, if she isn't careful she might be playing a game she might not be able to finish.
Eduardo Escobedo, son of the city's most notorious gang leader, has been the disappointment of the family. Shunned by his father for not fitting within the world he was born into, he has been nothing more than an outcast his whole life. In constant competition with his older brothers, an opportunity finally presents itself for Eduardo to prove his worth, and place in the family business. With the recent murders, Eduardo has been put in charge of finding the culprit, who is threatening his family's position, and to put an end to the accumulating murders.
When Eduardo finds himself in a near death situation, Esme ends up saving his life, and he finds himself indebted to her, while also finding themselves in a postions worth helping each other. In order to put an end to this, both must put away their differences despite being on opposing sides, while uncovering secrets and opening doors that might have been best locked away.
Diana is an 18 year old girl about to start her senior year until she bumps into a woman at the bookstore who has quite the personality. The woman takes the book Diana had her eye on.
Diana's senior year soon becomes one she would have never expected when the book thief and her meet again.
