Ambys 2024 Top Picks for Mystery/Thriller

Since homecoming night senior year, Aisling Turner has lived in a hell of her mother's creation. For five years, she's been trapped in Florida, wondering why she can't remember anything about the night her best friend disappeared. Cut off from the only family who ever loved her and all she's ever known.

It took five years, but she finally escaped and returned to the small town of Davies, Oklahoma.

Everything and nothing is the same.

But she's determined to make peace with her guilt. To say goodbye to Grams. To start over in the only place she's ever felt at home. If the town will let her, that is. Years later, most people still think she murdered her friend in the woods that night.

Even Aisling isn't so sure she's completely innocent.

Apparently, one of those "concerned citizens" believes Aisling knows more than she claims. They set off a chain reaction that puts Aisling on a path with Brett, her old high school crush, and his best friend, Deputy Leo, to discover what actually happened that night.

Aisling isn't completely sure she wants to know. But like the drive to come home, the desire to know the truth is too strong.

Even if it destroys her.

This carnival promises a night of fun for everyone. There are games, promising rewards, and food that no one has ever seen or tasted before. But what if this carnival isn't what it seems to be? (Currently completed as of October 2023, and finished editing as of March 2024) *****Excerpt***** Excerpt: Instead of seeing myself standing in front of me, there is somebody else and it's not my brother or anyone I know. A boy no older than me is just standing there, he is wearing a gray shirt with a hole in the shoulder and it has a handful of stains and dirt spots on it. I immediately know he is not from Treegrass. Not only have I never seen him before in my life but everyone in our town always wears nice clean and washed clothes, therefore nobody should be looking like him. The boy has a small cut on his cheek and is thin, a lot thinner than he should be. I look away from him and around at my surroundings, there is no one else here. I regain my composure and look at him again. That's when he says something that makes my blood run cold. "Run."

BEFORE YOU READ- DISCLAIMER! The main character is blunt, hates life and is very vulgar and hateful towards everyone and everything . However there is a reason for this. She is strong-headed and short-tempered, ill-mannered and disrespectful (though some may say in a loveable way). If this isn't for you, then I wouldn't suggest reading this book. It's about character development and personal growth. - Kody Lawrence is not normal. On the contrary, she's everything but. When the hot-headed, short-tempered, rude new girl arrives in the small town of Raven Hollow, Maine, most people are put off by her unexpected and -considering her horrible attitude and pessimism- unwanted appearance. However, despite her constant locked jaw, clenched fists and cold glare, Lilah Johansson, Kody's appointed 'buddy', can't help but want to be her new friend in spite of their not-so-impressive first impression. But Lilah is not to be sold separately, and with the friendly redhead comes four boys with charming smiles and welcoming arms that hide their own secrets and covered-up lies. Amongst the group of five, Dakota Black is the one who stands out with his calculating eyes and kind heart, and while Kody has no intention to stick around longer than a few months, he might just be the one to change that. With a duffel bag of money, a box-filled with different identities, a pocket full of problems and a closet stacked to the brim with secrets, Kody's quiet and peaceful Senior year takes a couple of unexpected turns. The only question is: Are they for better or for worse? ___ (Small disclaimer: The first few chapters aren't the greatest, but I took some time off from writing this book and came back to it when I'd gotten a bit better with writing, so if you can get past the rocky start, hopefully you won't regret it). ___ Re-published: 7.4.18 (7th of April) Finished: 9.3.20 (9th of March) Currently editing and correcting mistakes / plot holes. (Editing chapters at random)

Hey there folks, I'm Cody Phillips, welcome to New Orleans. N'awlins is known for many wonderful things, our coffee, music and the ability to throw a damn fine party. We're also known as the city most people believe may be one of the most haunted places in the world. Well, let me tell you this, we have more than our fair share. I know because I can see them. But, listen, don't spread that around. Yeah? It's been a closely guarded family secret my whole life. Not even my best friend knows this about me. See, I use my 'gift' in my work as a homicide detective with NOLA's finest boys in blue. Now, I understand why you might call it cheating, and that's fine. But I always catch the bad guy with the victim telling me everything I need to know and give the family involved closer. So it evens out as far as I can tell. Now just as my life is moving slower than a gator with a full belly, the worst happens. I get the call about a homicide that's hit too close to home. It leaves the girl of my dreams coming home to face tragedy. The moment I see her I find myself reminded of the one secret no one ever knew. Ever since I was eight years old I have felt many different things for Emma O'Neal, and those feelings haven't disappeared with time. Problem is now that she's come home; I find myself fighting not only an unknown assailant out for blood, my partner's misguided beliefs but my own need for the enticing beauty I'm duty sworn to protect. Damn, I just hope I'm able to fight the feelings I have for this woman, and stay focused on the case. Otherwise, I might end up losing something far more precious to me than the honor I've worked so hard for: Emma's life.
The Lost Life of Laraine by BearGoRawr
53 parts Ongoing
She lead a rather tragic life. The black sheep of her family due to her lack of affinity for fire. Her affinity was quite the opposite. Water in fact. Already in a time when women did not really have much political power or rights, she was outcasted by her family despite being of nobility. Still allowed to live in the distant west wing of the massive Grand Duke's manor, she has never eaten a single meal with her family nor extended family, and has spent her loneliness in her books and sword lessons. Although only taught by the head butler and one of the low ranked knights of the family, she was quite bright and if her family would have given her a chance she would have done great things. If only she didn't die at such a young age. Married off to some "hero" of sort that had slayed the Dragon of the North who was terrorizing the land and threatened the kingdom, this hero also had an affinity for fire and held her in disdain like the rest of her family. Suddenly a girl of another world was transported to their world, picked up by this hero and put into his secure care. The pair soon fell for each other despite the hero's marriage, and many believed Laraine got jealous of this girl of mystery, and tried to kill her. This was definitely not true. But because the girl was favored by the temple and kingdom Laraine was quickly arrested and put on trial. You can probably tell what happened to Laraine. But something strange happened the day of her execution. As soon as her decapitated head hit the ground the sky turned blood red and it began to rain fire. No one survived that day. But for some reason time went back, and Laraine was back to being a child, but with no memory of her future. There were select few in her life, however, that remembered her tragedy and now perhaps will take action to prevent it. NOTE: I'M AWARE THERE ARE A LOT OF INCONSISTENCIES. IT WILL BE EDITED SOME DAY BUT RIGHT NOW I'M JUST TRYING TO FINISH IT.
Break Me & Remake Me by KaijuYardz
54 parts Complete Mature
Aidan Crowley never planned on going back home. What for? To have his father spit in his face? To endure his sister's brooding glares? To face his ex-girlfriend and have to dig up some lame explanation for why he ran away? But when Lillian Crowley dies, Aidan finds himself drawn back in anyway. Just a simple visit to pay his respects - despite the dangerous waters and the sharks circling in the depths. And although the world he'd fled as a teen has changed in a lot of ways, much of it has stayed disappointingly the same. Enough so, it seems, as to bring out the worst in both Aidan and those he'd left behind. And then there's the matter of the seven sealed letters, and the warren of rabbit holes they open up beneath his feet. It's not long before Aidan is sinking, desperately struggling against chains of the past that he'd thought he'd cast off long ago, unable to break free until Lillian decides she's well and truly finished with him. He should have known: the heaviest steps a man can take are those that lead home. =============== SCHEDULE: New chapters every Mon/Wed/Fri until the story concludes in April. =============== Please COMMENT if you feel like it, I always love hearing what you think and what you predict might happen next. I also appreciate constructive feedback, if you have any, or you can DM that if you prefer. =============== CONTENT WARNING (mild spoilers): This story contains medium to heavy themes related to generational trauma and the kinds of things that tend to cause that. The characters are dealing with some serious issues, though none of it is presented gratuitously or explicitly. Despite the heavy themes, the general tone is positive and focuses on redemption and a brighter tomorrow. I won't leave you depressed at the end, I promise!
