Aaralyn is a young Autistic woman who has always had trouble forming and maintaining relationships. She is part of a large friend group, has a boyfriend, and seems to be happy. She is a musician and a huge Lord of the Rings fan. Her favorite character is Sméagol. She feels she has finally found people whom she can be herself around. She talks about her love for Lord of the Rings openly, and always carries her Sméagol doll with her in her purse. All her friends seem to love and accept her. Then, things start going south when her boyfriend, Dex, breaks up with her, which makes hanging out with her friends very awkward, seeing as he is also part of the friend group. To cope with the breakup, she backs out of social gatherings that involve the whole group, until she finally feels she can handle being around Dex again. However, looking back on the relationship, she realizes just how toxic he was to her. She confides this to her friends privately, and they all seem sympathetic and understanding, until one day, after three of her friends from the group, Veronica, Callie, and Chloe, convince her to come have fun with everyone, they overhear everyone else talking about her, saying horrible things about her. That's when she decides to leave the friend group, as well as Veronica, Callie, and Chloe. All hell breaks loose as several people from the group come after them all, harassing and verbally attacking them. Meanwhile, throughout all this, every night, Aaralyn sees Sméagol in her dreams, and has conversations with him. She tells him of her life, her music, her dreams, and everything she's going through. As things progressively get worse, Callie, Chloe, and Veronica all move in with Aaralyn, so she doesn't have to deal with it alone. Eventually, the four friends decide to move away without telling the others where they're going. They move to a beautiful location that looks oddly familiar to Aaralyn, and amazing things begin happening very quickly.
