Long ago, the Four Kingdoms – Saiora, Alitride, Lyliria, and Elspar – were nearly destroyed in a war that shattered the lives of millions. In the wake of a miraculous sacrifice that spared the Four from complete annihilation, the world became a changed and unfamiliar place: legends were written and rewritten, monarchs rose and fell, and the war's one great hero lay entombed in the mountains with her heart still beating, a reminder of all things won, forgotten, and lost.

Now, over two centuries later, a prophecy that has lain unfulfilled for decades is finally coming to fruition: seven beings, both human and not, will be united in a series of journeys that will determine the fate of their world, traveling across the Four Kingdoms and beyond in search of a long-lost heir who is destined to save far more than just her own rightful domain. In the distant west, something is waking that should have remained asleep, and it is left to the seven foretold to right the wrongs of history – and perhaps a few of their own. But there are breaks that cannot be mended, and tragedies that cannot be averted, and the seven shall soon discover the cost of salvation.
