It had been one year since the deaths of Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston. One year can change a person. Their life has to continue, even when it feels like it can't. The only thing keeping Ponyboy Curtis alive is the reminder of Johnny in the sunsets and sunrises. For the other gang members, they're still hanging on to memories, nothing more.

Darrel is stressed with work and taking care of his two brothers and was getting angry a lot recently. Sodapop felt disconnected and almost sick all of the time and was very tired of being a middleman to his brothers all the time. Ponyboy was struggling with his sexual orientation and was scared what others would say when he realised he had fallen in love with, not even a girl, but Johnny Cade. Really just me trauma-dumping onto all of the Curtis brothers and adding Darrel's anger issues to the mix.

The brothers still let Loren stay with them but she always had the feeling they hated her. After a severe car accident, Loren pretended to be mute to see if they acted different. This also happened to be around the time her dad was getting out of jail and she has to make a life changing decision... stay with the Curtis', or move hundreds of miles away with her dad.
