Mary Conklin has spent every summer in Cousins Beach since she can remember. She and her family stay with her mom's best friend, Susannah Fisher, and her three sons, Conrad, Jeremiah, and Theodore Fisher.

This summer feels different. Mary is more confident in herself and has finally gotten her braces off. This summer is the summer that Mary turned pretty, along with her sister Belly. Mary can feel the change in the air, something big is going to happen this summer. Belly seems to disagree with her sister though, believing that it will be just like every other summer that they have spent in Cousins Beach with the Fisher family.

Mary has been in love with Theodore Fisher since they were children, but she's only ever told that to her sister, Belly, and her two best friends, Taylor and Sadie. What Mary doesn't know is that Theodore returns her feelings, and has for a long time. This summer Theodore and Mary have both gained enough courage to finally tell the other how they feel. But both are worried that they will ruin their friendship forever.
