In Compass, a sprawling metropolis built above the sea, the relationship between Human and Elf has never been better. They work together, hand in hand, to sail great ships, craft tools superior to any other, and fashion clothes that accentuate both races. Having put aside the differences between them, both humankind's empire and the elvish states have come together in many ways. Some start businesses together, venturing into the world of economics. Very few have fallen in love, creating children with elvish and human blood. Many have shared a drink under the light of the stars in open-air taverns that spring up around the town. If anything, Compass is a testament to the ability for all races to come together. Reaching for the North Star, Polaris itself, with each other. A child born from the union between human and elf, in the comforts of high society, finds herself dissatisfied with this vision of Compass. To her, the city speaks in a different tongue, one that does not follow the illusion surrounding it. People do not live together; they merely exist parallel to the other person. She has lived her life hiding from the eyes of society, alone in a house of nobility. Years passed in her life, years full of shame, grief, and loneliness. Losing her home, her status as a noble, and the family name, she ventures out and discovers more than she ever knew about the city. Here is where the story begins. (If anyone would like they could attempt to make a cover art for my god awful attempt at a novel. I hope you enjoy reading this weird tale of mine!)

Gwyneth had always felt connected to her faith, a higher power presiding over her. That faith had shaken that devastating day those years ago, the day that went on to haunt her every nightmare for years to come. She's still trying to come back from it, to not only restore her faith in life and love, but her faith in herself. The sanctity of her spirit- she prayed for resolve. Every punch was a prayer. Every mile was a hymn. Until her knuckles bled and her knees gave. Azriel had been surrounded by darkness his whole life, a poison on his world, on his being. He exercised restraint in his every waking moment, banishing that darkness within himself. Some guessed of the strain it put on him, but no one knew the extent of it, how deep his scars ran. It was better this way, he was sure. He had always thought that if there were a higher power- which he wholly doubted- such deities must loathe him to have burdened him such darkness. He hadn't much faith in the gods anyway, much less faith that he could sway their opinion on him. But Gwyneth and Azriel did have one thing in common: the quiet fight within themselves. They only knew one way: to go about it alone, couldn't fathom letting another in. But there's a magic in finding someone who is your equal but opposite, something transforming. And frankly, Gwyneth and Azriel could both use a little magic. All characters owned by SJM in the ACOTAR series. Story takes place after the events of ACOSF. Aligns with the events in my other fic: A Storm of Flames and Deceit. I haven't finished Crescent City, so this story takes place outside of the events of those books as well. Ethilir, eldest of the kingdoms of men, ruled by the righteous bringers of light and life to the East, has endured since the Revealing as a force of order and civilization. The star of its capital, Sarom, however is now troubled. Oracles hint that the sacred gift that burns in the blood of those chosen to sit upon the Sunlit Throne no longer touches that artifact. Something is not as it should be as forces move in the shadows of a city that boasts such brilliant lights. Marred and exiled from her homeland, Vassa Ithrennyn is used to solitary wandering. Her mask hides memories as much as marks and her hidden heritage spells danger for all who approach. However isolated she might prefer to be, however, a simple rescue in the Sea of Sand pulls her into a web of danger spun by those with designs on the power of the Sunlit Throne. Protecting the young fire-speaker she saved is a task more dangerous than she could have ever expected, but cunning and gifted with ancient magic, perhaps she can save Seben from them...and herself.
