For Alaric Nighshade, the world outside of his kingdom hasn't treated him kindly, and to use magic is to inherently be evil, or at least to people like Rhea. For once, he wants to be the good guy.
In the end, sometimes it takes a dragon threatening everything you know, to be able to see someone in a different light.
