Nico di Angelo works in a coffee shop. He's colour blind. Will Solace is a regular customer studying to become a surgeon. He has synaesthesia. Their views of the world may be the opposite, but they may be the only people in the world for each other.

Max is gone, but the aliens who took him are far from done. Soon after Max dies, the Elbaskins take back his baby, leaving the Taylors empty-handed and empty-hearted. Mars is upset, feeling slightly responsible, when he overhears a plot to kidnap two more specimens for their experiments. Mars volunteers himself to be taken because he is worried about Max's son, whom he keeps having very vivid dreams about. Since he was not chosen as a specific specimen, the aliens guarantee nothing experimental will be done to him. Once he and the others arrive on the ship, though, Mars discovers that there is much more to these aliens that Max could have ever known and he realizes that what his friend endured was only a fraction of what the Elbaskins could do.
