THERE WAS ONE PRECISE MOMENT of the year in which Carolina Oakley felt at peace, and it was the summer.
Since she was a little baby, maybe even a newborn, her family had been coming down to Cousins every fifth of June and stayed in town until the end of the summer.
Carolina always loved Cousins, the summer, and the beach house. The breeze tainted with the salty air coming from the cold ocean, the sun shining against her skin warming her inside. She truly loved everything about the summer, because it was the only time of the year in which she could be free and live without a care in the world.
But the main reason for her unconditional love for the season was Conrad, her very best friend.
She didn't have a favorite thing about the boy to point out, he was just himself, and she liked that, all of it. They were the ones with the special bond of the families, they grew up to be inseparable, since anyone could remember they were always Carolina and Conrad, no one else mattered to them as much as each other.
Susannah always used to say they were meant to be.
And little did they know it was true.
