Ranger Lone, alone in the world except for his friend Annalore, have found they are lost in a world that has become Tumbledown.
People are becoming infected with a disease that makes them become uncontrollably violent before death. And after that, it only gets worse. With outbreaks happening all across the world, the military announces that all survivors should make their way to the city of Calgary. Ranger and Annalore plan to make their way there, even if they have to walk the whole way to reunite with their mutual friend Clover Flower.
Along the way, they find themselves having to team up with other survivors including the slightly suspicious North, the pacifist Noah and the ever remorseful professor Fowler.
With the world changing, storms lasting for days, if not weeks, as well as warnings across the prairies of monsters even more dangerous than anything else roaming among the infected, and evil people having free roam to do what they want without society to stop them. It becomes clear to them that the world will never be the same.

But in order to protect the reputation of their late mother and their well-known family name, the Astor brothers raised Miracle as their own and made the public believe that she was the full-blood daughter of the Astor family.
Sixteen years later, Miracle became depressed and neglected as she carries the heavy weight of pain, guilt, and blame for what happened to her mother.
But what happens when history tries to repeat itself with what happened to Aurora now to Miracle? And the terrible secret of their family cracks and reveals itself out to everyone?
