Alex had enough with Kings and Queens; being a servant at the Telmar Palace does that to you. The only royal person she could ever learn to tolerate was her best friend, Prince Caspian. And even his life was ruined because of the title. 

As Caspian is forced to flee the castle the night of his cousin's birth, Alex's father appoints her with the task of keeping him alive. She had no skills at sword fighting or any experience at surviving outside the castle whatsoever... But, hey, at least her father gave her a reliquary and a final piece of advice: "Be brave."

Things go south, like they only can when a teenage girl is given the responsibility of taking care of a fugitive Prince. Coincidentally, her only chance at succeeding at her mission is hanging around with yet... more Kings and Queens. Ancient and legendary ones, at that.
