The truth is out. Rose Quartz, the leader of the Crystal Gem rebellion, was Pink Diamond all along. It shocked all of the Gems, but Steven was the most affected. What pushes him over the edge is when Pearl and the other Crystal Gems still want him to be like her. Pearl doesn't realize, though, that she will set off a chain of events that nobody could've predicted, starting with her 'baby' going back to when it all began.
