Some things in Sara's past she has kept to herself. These things still leave her gasping for air after waking up from the nightmares that haunt her, no, they're not really nightmares. They're memories.
When she meets Ava and starts falling for her, she's afraid. Not just of her feelings for Ava, but also of the aftereffects of her past.
