the summer right before senior year, 17-year-old olive peterson discovers how much she hates matt sturniolo for the way he betrayed her at a summer kickoff party. matt and olive have a hateful relationship now which is hard on olive because she used to be close with matt and she struggles to be at home considering how much she hates her parents. with the stress of her older brother leaving for college soon and her being left alone with her shitty parents, the last thing she needs to be worrying about is matt and his idiotic actions. matt just seems to keep making more and more mistakes the more he's left alone, and olive seems to be more hurt by it. "i don't want you to do something stupid or get hurt." now is that what she really means by that or is she just blind? olive acts like she hates him so much so no one will catch on, but she does a rather horrible job of hiding her love for matt, it's almost like she didn't realize she was in love with him herself.
