Jefferson Davis reluctantly accepts the Presidency of the breakaway States of the Confederacy. The United States is plunged into Civil War. With the North holding industrial and economic power, the South must seek European allies for support. Jefferson dispatches Ambassadors to England and France to plead his case of mutual assistance.
The Civil War brings economic hardship to Great Britain. With cheap cotton from Southern fields blockaded in port, famine and ruin spread through the cities and mill towns, the population is in discontent, riots breakout and many English northern cities take sympathy with the Confederate cause.
The British Government, influenced by public opinion and a powerful secret society called The Ring, sees a opportunity for revenge for the 1812 War with America, and a chance to secure and expand their Canadian borders.
However Queen Victoria has other problems, with her faraway Colony of New Zealand in conflict with the native Māori, does England have the capability to fight two wars in either end of the globe? She must quickly settle the dispute in New Zealand before considering any plans on the American continent.
Her plans of a peaceful resolution in faraway New Zealand are far from easily resolved, with the Rings vested economic interest in acquiring land from the Natives either at a pittance, force or by forfeiture, they will do anything to prevent peace.
