He slammed his hand on the desk.
The sound hit the room like a gunshot.

I flinched. then he spoke.
And I wish - I will wish, for a long time - that he hadn't.

"Just Shut the Fuck up just stop this nonsense This isn't a movie." His voice was quiet now, which was somehow worse than the slam. Quiet and precise and each word chosen like a weapon selected carefully from a rack.

"Whatever you think you're feeling it isn't real. It's obsession. Childish, stubborn, spoiled obsession. You don't want me. You want to win. I am a challenge to you. A thing you've decided you should have, and when you get bored, you'll put it down and walk away, and you won't even remember why you wanted it." I couldn't breathe.

"You don't care about your studies. You don't care about anything except yourself and what you want in the moment. And the moment this stops being fun, you'll leave. Just like-" He stopped. Something flashed across his face. There and gone. "Just like spoiled brats always do."

"Professor-" My voice came out wrong. Too small.

"Don't." He was already looking away. Back at the papers. "You can leave."

I stood.
My legs worked. My hands worked. My face - I think my face was composed. I think.

"You don't know anything about me," I said. It came out steadier than I expected, which I was grateful for, even then.

"And I don't want to," he said.
