the burning heat of the summer sun, dirty converse kicking up dust, towering trees, and worn-down log cabins. camp blackwood is in desperate need of counselors-not that anyone talks about why- and elowyn's been hired for the job.
camp has all the usual things: terrible mess hall food, uncomfortable work uniforms, teenagers sneaking in cases of beer, and an algae-covered lake no one really wants to step foot in. the other counselors-harry, niall, louis, liam, and the rest-seem friendly enough. But some of them act like they know more than they're letting on.
what the newspapers refused to print-and what the camp directors won't admit-is that the last summer camp blackwood was open, not everyone made it back. dozens of campers and several counselors were found dead throughout the woods, as if someone had hunted them down. others were never found at all, their cabins left eerily untouched, their belongings still neatly folded on their bunks as if they had simply vanished. the case went cold. the town moved on.
of course, that could all just be a local urban legend. but now, as the sun sinks behind the trees and the cicadas scream through the thick summer air, elowyn is starting to think that whatever had haunted this place years earlier never really left. and maybe, just maybe, they weren't given the full job description.
