Ziah lives her life in constant fear, fear of the Dames and their harsh punishments, fear of missing a check-in, and fear of losing anything else she has. After a devastating accident left her with a severe concussion and no sight, she is forced to rely on another to ensure her own safety. The only problem is that someone is replacing Artemis, challenging the one person she could trust.
In the aftermath of a deadly storm, more than half the population has been destroyed. The authorities keep a close watch on and control the survivors, mandating check-ins for everything. Meals, sleep, travel, work, and even love. As rogues become more violent and the government loses patience, Ziah becomes part of an underground division aiming to free the people of Arca. As more, including her own sister, becomes endangered, she wonders if freedom is even worth the price.
