The close knit town of Darkwood had a rather morbid bedtime story among its children. A shadowman, tall, wearing a long trench coat and tilted hat, lurks the streets, forests, playgrounds, and candy shoppes at night. He likes to find little children who do not listen to their parents. If you see him, you better run and not get caught, or else you will end up like little Evelyn Prescott.
A story that has been passed down generations of parents to their children so that they obey them, though many now do not realize the dark and horrible truth to it.
The disappearance of 11 year old Evelyn Prescott in 1932 had changed Darkwood forever. The town did not rest, even when her 17 year old brother Wesley was convicted for her murder. He hadn't spoken a word since his arrest, so Evelyn was still missing to the rest of the town, even if he knew where she was. After being deemed criminally insane, Wesley was instituted at a lunatic asylum, where he remained in a permanent catatonic state.
After a long 8 years, it seemed as if the town had finally come to rest. Though, on one cold November day, as a nurse was bringing Wesley his breakfast, his cell was found empty with no signs of escape.
In 1942, both Evelyn and Wesley's disappearances were considered cold cases, and even if most had decided to put it to rest, it couldn't stop detective Laverne Slater from getting to the bottom of it. Most had presumed both to be dead, and the remaining members of the Prescott family had moved far away. As a young woman in her field, she needed to prove herself worthy of her position. What better way to do it than solve the towns most haunting mystery, all the while receiving murderous threats to leave the case in the dust?

For five years, Evelyn turned up missing. Locked at the bottom of an endless void of water in a metal safe. Trapped in a coma of her own. Though she returns, nothing in her life is the same.
Her family has vanished without a trace. The home she has spent more torturous yet joyful moments in, the closest thing to home, destroyed and left in rubble. Her best friends, her brother, her own daughter, missing without so much as a trail. No one left to help her, console her, tell her everything will be okay.
Within the span of five months, Evelyn has managed to rise back to her feet, but she's dropped her old life. Temporarily. Changing her hair style, and name, she's confided in people eligible to help her. But per usual, she's ultimately bound to making enemies.
Creating a new enemy was not on her agenda, especially not one that she is agreeing to marry. After getting into a situation she can't seem to get herself out of, she is forced to stay in the same house as someone she hates as much as he hates her. But as time drags on, the line between love and hate seems to blur.
Forcing herself to focus on her main objective, she attempts to limit as much time with him as possible. But living in the same house, despite its rather large build, she's bound to run into him by chance.
Evelyn will do anything to save her family, as they had done many occasions before-for her. Even if it means destroying her own happiness in the process.
