A concealed Saiyan couple, seeking refuge from the Frieza Empire, struggled to survive on a distant planet. Their ability to defend themselves was limited. When they had a baby boy, they discovered that his power level was 490, just below that of the royal heir's, using a stolen power reader from Planet Vegeta. This revelation proved to be their downfall as Frieza's patrolmen detected it, prompting Frieza herself to arrive. She killed the parents but spared the baby, whom she named Rangel.
Frieza recognized the potential in Rangel's power and hoped that he could become her right-hand warrior in her quest for universal domination. Despite the potential threat he posed, Frieza chose to raise Rangel as a formidable warrior.
