After two years, Sherlock returns to an empty, dusty flat with a melancholy Mrs. Hudson and no John in sight. He asks Mrs. Hudson where John is.
"Sherlock, dear. You should have come back before... He's gone."
The lonely life of Sherlock Holmes continues without his companion.
