Some years ago, I happened to be living on an old farm in OK. I restored the old, 100 year old hen house and started my own flock. Before I was done, I had 200 laying hens plus the roosters.
Call me crazy, but when I was buying babies, I happened across a local bird breeder and got 2 female and 1 male turkey.
About the same time, my girls had started laying eggs, a neighbor's teenage son helped me to build a hutch for the tiny wild rabbits, I had rescued and raised. Evidently, sometime during the day, one of my 'turkey girls' (snoopy) was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her middle toe was broken. It had to be those heavy work boots, the boy was wearing.
I noticed her standing in the middle of the yard, barely limping, when all the rest of the birds were herding themselves off to the house at dusk. I examined her, then picked her up and carried her to the henhouse. She couldn't jump up to the roost, so I held her while she got her balance.
The next morning, all the birds came

"Good news hunny the new neighbours are moving in today and I've invited them around for dinner" my mum said excitedly. "And I'm supposed to be excited because...." if my tone doesn't give it away, I'm not excited for new neighbours, my best friend lived in that house but after a tragic accident that took her life her parents decided to up and sell. "I appreciate that its hard but the Hunts are a lovely family and they have children one is slightly older than you and the other is a few months younger, and I suggest you play nice" my mum warned. "Are you joking me mum! no matter who moves in next door nothing will change, Lily is dead and no matter how friendly you are to the Hunts they will never replace Lily!" I always knew i wasn't meant for the heels anyway. When I joined the army, I was young and foolish. I thought I would become invencible but my first experience in the field showed me just how naive I was. Abandoned by my own nation, with a team of 5 brave men, sent on a suicidal misson. In the middle of the nowhere, thirsty, starving, I realized the real essence of humanity. We conquered the desert, we completed the mission, they said. We were heroes, they said. However, most of us, dead heroes. I lost my whole team to the desert. The president, the media, never confirmed their deaths. They gave them as lost in the field when I myself saw them fall one by one. They gave them as lost in battle when we both know just how they died. My mistake? I opened my mouth. Life was dull, boring, and mechanical. I’ve always wondered if this would change. If something interesting will happen. I always hoped something interesting will happen. A falling meteor that would destroy half of town, an alien invasion, or even the Apocalypse. I figured it would take an hour more or so for the sun to show its shining face, so I decided to eat breakfast and take a bath first.
