Thanatos is blamed for rising the dead souls of Tartarus.
It's up to Her cousin Zoee Aster, a child of Hypnos, and her to figure out who's riding the dead and why.
Along the way they meet Evan Eliott, a seventeen year old Halfblood, a child of Apollo, who helps them on their quest.

Still, there are those who remain loyal to the king, but there are those who choose to remain neutral in fear for they do not wish to be punished if they choose wrong. On top of the threats of war the relations between demigods and their parents both sour and get better, depending on the god/goddesses.
