It had been five years since Balinor had died and three since Arthur had become king.

Life in Camelot was surprisingly peaceful until Merlin noticed changes in his appearance.

Knowing something was wrong when his magic refused to work or the spells were weaker/stronger than they should have been. When he found out from Kilgharrah what was happening to him he knew he had to leave Camelot until he regained control.

He knew he had to find Vivianna to help him achieve his goal. He had been told that this trip might take him several months, but he had no choice if he didn't want to accidentally hurt someone he cared about.

Together with Gaius's help, he came up with a suitable excuse for why he wasn't there.

However, he didn't expect that his sudden disappearance would have such an impact on his friends because he didn't consider himself important.
