Adam Parrish is a new student at Aglionby Academy, where the students are taught four core values; tradition, honour, discipline and excellence. While he has had to work for his place at the school, his roommate, Gansey, is the third of his family to go to the school, born to play the role of the dutiful son. They both expect their year to be all about classes and homework, but with their growing friendship and the lesson from their new history teacher, Mr Czerny, their worlds are thrown off course.

I didn't come here to make friends. I came to the academy to start a war. Luxbridge Academy isn't what they all think it is: a prestigious school created to right the wrongs of troubled kids. It's built to turn people like me into weapons-cold, obedient, deadly. And I was ready for that. What I wasn't ready for was him. My rival. My roommate. My biggest mistake. He's reckless, infuriating, impossible to ignore, and the one person I can't afford to distract me. But in a place where pain is currency and loyalty gets you killed, he became my only real ally. We were never meant to trust each other. Never meant to care. Definitely never meant to fall. But we did. We escaped the cage. We thought that was the end. It wasn't. Because fate doesn't break the rules. It breaks you.
