The main character of this story is Luciana Wakefield. Her family calls her Lucy. After her grandparents death, her father opens up another business in Wilmington, North Carolina. At the age of fourteen, Lucy and her family move to North Carolina. When walking on the beach one day, she meets a boy named Zach. After that day, Zach becomes her best friend. The story shows flashbacks, and flash forwards in Lucy life. 

One summer, Hayden James, Zac's cousin, comes to stay with him in North Carolina. Zac has had a crush on his best friend Lucy since the day he met her. But he hasn't acted on it, because he is afraid if they start something, and it doesn't work out, then he won't see her anymore. When he is finally ready to put that fear behind him and ask her out, a problem arises. His cousin Hayden is also pursuing her. 

Will Lucy end up with her best friend Zac or will she go for his annoying cousin Hayden?
