“Fuck it,” I said, pulling my hair down and shaking my head. My hair fell to my upper back and I sauntered out of the bathroom, kicking my heels off and carrying them back to the dining room.
Adam’s eyes bulged from his head as he took me in. His brother’s hooted and made whooping noises. I’d miss them. All five of them. Adam’s father even had a smug look on his face, but his mother. Oh, oh my, his mother. Her face was bright crimson and I was almost positive I could see steam erupting from her ears.
I smiled brightly at his mother, holding my dress in one hand and my heels in the other. “Thank you, Mrs. Owens, for inviting me in your home. I appreciate all your family has given me.” My eyes turned to Adam and I kept the smile glued to my face. “I also appreciate every bruise, cut, and smack your son has given me.” Adam’s eyes turned dark green and my smile became real.
