Rejection. Betrayal. Heartbreak. Grief. Unfortunately, we've all had a swallow, some more than others, of this bitter brew. This is just a sliver of my chapter that is a part of this world's grand narrative; it's about one person's toe dipping into the brokenness of the Earth, and the ripples, waves, tsunamis it created in her life. A couple of months ago, while consoling a friend grieving the loss of a relationship, he asked me a question no one had ever asked me before. A very vulnerable and powerful question. I had been sharing some of my own similar experiences with him when he messaged me that life changing question, "And, what did you see at the top of the mountain?" While his words were just letters on a screen, I could see the hunger in his eyes, hear the desperation in his voice, sense the overwhelming thirst of a person climbing up an incredibly steep and treacherous mountain. What did I see at the top of the mountain? This book is my answer to this question. Let's go for a hike.

-A Lie I decided to focus on family, choosing to believe and have faith that everything else would fall into place. I wasn't comfortable-or good-at lying to her. So, when Samantha surprised me one day by swallowing her pride and asking directly if anything had happened during our break, I hesitated. The silence, I believed, said it all. I was on the verge of confessing when she gave me an out: "If you tell me nothing happened, I'll believe you," she said. I should have told her the truth then-or resolved never to reveal it. Instead, years later, as I left for the final time, I selfishly brought it up. By confessing, I hoped to push her away. But in that moment, I let her believe what she clearly wanted to hold on to-that I had been faithful. She knew Pippa and probably sensed there was something between us, but she let it go-and so did I. It was cowardice, I know. Still, I made up my mind to make our dream a reality. And for a while, it worked. But fast-forward through the births of our three additional sons, and more than a dozen years, the same problems that once threatened us had only grown and would soon spiral out of control.

This book and its running narrative as well as other short stories were created as a way for me to work through my burnout. This is my first published work of fiction. It was conceptualised during a burnout I experienced back in 2017. With support from family, friends and a professional with whom to talk, I tried working through the burnout over the period of a year. Avalon was expecting nature, bugs, and wildlife while running away from her problems. She wasn't expecting anything like what she finds after getting diverted from the trail she planned to hike. Or perhaps, it found her.
