He's unsure of himself, choosing to remain silent. Fearful of what may happen if he did not take the fall.  Even if he told the truth no one would believe. What if he tried? Chance at redemption

For the first time in months when he awoke it was quiet, he could hear himself ere was no nagging in his ear, pulling him in all directions, conflicting his every decision.
