Born as Anastasia Diana Blackthorn, she was the daughter of two powerful witches, Amelia Anderson-Blackthorn and James Blackthorn. Descendant of two old and powerful witch bloodlines.

Fate dealt her a cruel hand when, at the tender age of four, her parents perished in a tragic plane crash. She was soon adopted by her godmother Miranda Sommers-Gilbert, and her husband Grayson. Over the years, Miranda and Grayson became her parents, and their children, Elena and Jeremy, became her siblings. Thus, Anastasia Blackthorn became Anastasia Gilbert, affectionately called Ana. 

The story begins three and a half months after the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Ana's adoptive parents. The arrival of the Salvatore brothers in town marks the start of a new chapter filled with secrets and revelations. Ana, a siphoner by birth, had kept her magical abilities a secret, known only by her adoptive parents and her mentor, Sheila Bennett. But with the Salvatore brothers in town, the veil of secrecy begins to lift.
