In the picturesque town of Cielo Colorato, young Beatrice, or Bea, moves from New York back to Italy to care for her ailing grandmother, Nonna. Beatrice viewed being in the town as a burden, but found a way to channel her frustration into painting. While dealing with enemies at school and facing new friendships, she has a chance encounter with the creature dwelling in the forest. Bea is then faced with a life-altering choice. Will she become a victim of the lurking darkness, or can she forge an unlikely friendship with the very creature the town fears?
