Seventeen-year-old Barry gets involved in a dirty deal to pay his cancer-stricken mother's hospital bills. The crime seems foolproof: While the hated millionaire O'Callaghan family is away, a small gang wants to break into their mansion.

But the burglary fails when the family's son, Douglas O'Callaghan, catches them in the act. Newcomer Barry is left behind by his colleagues, who want to save their own skins. But then events take a completely different turn than Barry ever thought they would. He and Doug become friends and Barry discovers new feelings within himself. But at the same time he is drawn into a downward spiral and involuntarily becomes further involved in illegal activities.
