In 1861, a young man from Virginia named James eagerly enlisted in the Confederate army, fired up with ideals of Southern honor and states' rights. We follow James as he leaves behind his family's farm and loving fiancee to join the war effort.

James experiences a swift loss of innocence as he enters his first battles under General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The visceral horrors of combat reveal war's true colors. Still, camaraderie with his fellow soldiers motivates James to stand strong.

As the war rages on, James questions the morality of the Southern cause. But devotion to his comrades-in-arms keeps him bound to duty. He rises through the ranks, gaining new responsibilities and facing challenging decisions.

James forges close friendships with the men under his command. He comes to depend on them like brothers, creating bonds that transcend war's chaos. But death haunts the battlefield, putting James' leadership skills to the ultimate test.

By the war's final years, hunger, disease and endless slaughter grind down all sides. James grapples with the damage done to the country and his own principles. Though exhausted and disillusioned, he remains steadfast to protect his loyal men.

***UPDATE: I am super excited to announce that Tattered Gray is available on Amazon in paperback and Ebook! It's free with Kindle Unlimited. Reviews would be much appreciated. https://t.co/hi0M0qHCmE I will leave the first six chapters of the book here on Wattpad for users to enjoy, errors and all (I'm trying not to cringe), as I'm doing final edits. Once available, I will post the link for purchase here. Thank you all so, SO much for reading this story and providing me with invaluable feedback. It is 1864, and the War Between the States has brought combat to Desoto Parish, Louisiana. Seventeen-year-old farmer's daughter Luciana Lanton must try to find her father-or what is left of him-after the Battle of Mansfield. Instead of her father, she discovers a young Confederate soldier, Henry Asher, lost and forgotten after having been severely wounded in battle. Determined to not see another man die, she does her best to nurse the soldier back to health. It isn't long before she finds herself enamored by his winsome heart and controversial thinking, spiting society's definition of an ideal match. To complicate matters further, her mother insists that she instead be receptive to the attention of Beauregard Dozier, an unexpected but wealthy suitor with a questionable past, so as to ensure there is food on the family table. With her family's wellbeing at stake, will Lucy abide by sensibility or recklessly succumb to her heart's wishes, and will Beau's history intertwine with her future? Inspired by civilian accounts of the Red River Campaign, Tattered Gray is a story of the devastating ramifications of war, life in a society both prejudiced and volatile, and the chance at an extraordinary love in spite of it all.

Set in the era of the Civil War, Ann has always struggled with her position in life. Seen as a useless girl to her family, Ann tries to see better of herself but feels herself falling to her family's views. She feels like she can't do anything, especially when her older brother, Martin, is conscripted to the war effort, where Ann is sure he will die. In a whirlwind decision, she decides to disguise herself as a male soldier, impersonating Martin and going off to war. Florence is an African-American girl with a fire in her heart. She's gutsy, with enough bravado to put the mightiest warriors to shame. A long-time friend of Ann's, Florence knows how it feels to be looked down on. But she can feel her warrior's heart inside her, urging her to fight in the Civil War, to fight for the freedom of her people. Unleashed anger and frustration burn in her bloodstream, begging to be set free. But how can she fight, when she's just a girl? Hugh is a seemingly selfish, self-conceded Southern boy who has been conscripted to fight the North. As the war rages on, he struggles to choose a side, indecision tearing at him. He knows that while one choice might be morally right, he knows that choosing that side could rip him from the beliefs his family has instilled in him since the day he was born. In a brutal twist of fate, all three of their lives collide, when Hugh, Florence, and Ann meet each other on the bloody battlefield of Gettysburg. But will they put aside their prejudices for survival? Or will they let themselves be torn apart by the worries and doubt that cloud all their minds?
