Astraea's parents are your typical, devoted, mormon churchgoers - embedded in an active, loving community. Except at home, they turn into belligerent, deranged alcoholics with no regards to their children. Because of this - Astraea develops a rather cynical view towards Christianity, and grapples with the notion of it. She ultimately turns to her friends and peers for answers.

"I just hate how some people treat Christianity as some sort of... birthright? Or something? Like, don't you have to earn that shit? Don't you have to earn the right to proclaim that kind of grand declaration, 'I'm a Christian'? Like, what does that even mean? To be a Christian? What's the difference between being a sleaze that says they believe in God and being a sleaze who doesn't? They're still both fucking sleazes. One's just a fucking liar. Because if you'd really believe in God, if you'd really believe a God - who has ultimate control over the world and your fate - exists, and that divine punishment is real, then you wouldn't dare be the fucking despicable person you still are. I just don't get that part.

I think if I truly believed a transcendent, omniscient being existed, not to mention with supreme and absolute authority - I'd read the bible 20 times over before I'd even mow the lawn. Just being so scared to do anything. Just being so scared of crossing any lines. Are we forgetting this is the God that wiped out a whole nation with a flood? What has even changed since then?"
