The syndicate quickly envelops the undercity's eight gang lords in an all-out war of succession. And Mori, caught right in the center of the conflict, finds herself swept up in the tide of criminal politics and tribal gangster warfare...

She flies home from war, upset, to do what needs to be done, but once there she finds out all is not as it seems. Ellie’s daughter is alive and unhurt. She is being held by of one of the many debt-recovery corporations. Held, for leverage, to make Ellie do the corporation a favour. Ellie’s daughter will be returned unharmed if Ellie does as they wish. The son of a company director is lost somewhere in the wilderness of post-debt-restructuring America, and hasn't been seen for three days. The company wants Ellie to go and find the kid, and Ellie doesn't know if she can. The one rule she's stuck to all her working life is to never to go to America, but now she might have to. She will have to, if she wants to save the daughter she hasn't seen in years. Aaaannnnd he's being whipped in the marketplace....Never mind, he was saved. Whoa, what are they rubbing all over him? Hey, why is Sarah naked in your palace...Is she in your bed? "How am I going to train these fools to use their powers? These are the ones who will be saving Earth and the other worlds....Keep your hands above the table where I can see them!" Akili says, then looks at her magic orb. "Oh, look, pirates!" Sarah says "Stay away from those!" Kanye exclaims "Does he ever stop staring?" Sarah wonders out loud, looking at Jabbar, who is staring at her, "No," he replies, smiling at her. And to think they will have to live together from now on, I will have so much fun, Akili thinks, watching her magic orb and waiting for keyshards to appear.
