Lyla Russo, a 25-year-old woman of mixed Italian and American heritage, reflects on her past and her relationship with her parents. She loves her single mother, who works as a clerk at a small post office, and tries not to burden her with her needs. Lyla wonders about her father, but her mother has only ever said that he was a mistake.
Five years ago, Lyla started working as a junior assistant at T&J company, where she meets her attractive, confident, and somewhat arrogant boss, Xavier Sterling. Lyla is shocked when she is suddenly asked to work on the 32nd floor, reporting to Xavier himself. As Lyla begins her new role, she is nervous about working with the intimidating and attractive Xavier, who has a reputation as a "sexy beast." Meanwhile, Xavier is frustrated with the delay in finding a new assistant for his project and hopes that Lyla is the right person for the job
