1890s farm girls Nell and Fern have spent their teen years dreaming about their first love. The sisters spend their days pining for a romance like the ones in novels and, when their father hires 17-year-old farm hand Matthew, it seems like Nell is finally getting her chance. Fern hangs onto every detail of her older sister's whirlwind romance, but it doesn't take long for her feelings of excitement to change to jealousy. Fern begins to wonder if maybe the boy on the farm wasn't meant for her sister at all and struggles to keep her feelings a secret. Choosing between her lifelong desire for romance and her love for her sister, she is faced with an impossible decision about the true cost of love and realizes romance may not be as blissful as it seems.
