Sorry I'm late," I exclaimed as I skidded through the door. The art teacher looked at me as I made my entrance. "They didn't hold the elevator and I had to drag my stuff up three flights of stairs and the strap on my shoe broke."
"My star artist ladies and gentlemen," Mrs. Mathis announced.
"Uh, I don't know about star per say," I stammered. "I mean. I'm okay but I uh." I pulled at my braid nervously.
"Sit down Cora," she laughed.
"Thank you," I whispered. The only available seat was between my friend and a guy who wasn't even paying attention. He just stared out the window, occasionally touching the dented locket around his neck.
*What's up with him?* I signed to my friend.
*Don't know.* Had he been crying? He eventually got up to sharpen his pencil. I slipped one of my favorite drawings onto his desk. Elena has just been hired as an executive secretary at a large tech company. Specialized in making security systems and chips. The CEO of the company is known to be a very dominant man. Elena is not the first executive secretary the company has seen. Most quickly resigned because they could not work with Mr. Smith. It's her first day. Elena takes a seat at 7:45 am behind a desk near the door of the CEO's office. Mr. Smith's office. She is nervous about meeting Mr. Smith. She doesn't want to make any mistakes on her first day. 7:59 am. The elevator doors open. She looks straight into the bright blue eyes of a man who is talking loudly on the phone. In his hand a leather briefcase. His dark blue uniform matches perfectly with his dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. Elena is distracted for a moment. If he had looked at Elena for even one second, he would have seen her staring at him in admiration. But he doesn't even notice her. He immediately walks to the door to enter his office. The only thing he snaps at her while on the phone: "Espresso please." and during those words he throws a stack of papers on her desk. The first day with Mr. Smith has begun... ~~~NB! I take everything from her hands and the doorman opens the door to the building for me with a big smile. I don't so much as glance around on the way to the elevator. Usually I would take my time studying the current interior and grade them in my head, but I actually have no time for any of that. I tap my foot impatiently in the elevator and straighten out everything in my hands while I head up to the fortieth floor. I watch the numbers move up achingly slow and barely wait for the doors to open before I slip through them. I head down the hall and see an open door that leads to a big office space. When I enter, I'm immediately met with a warm smile from the receptionist. I exhale heavily and smile back. "Violet Parker?" She asks and I nod my head, still trying to catch my breath. "Sorry I'm late." "You're right on time." She stands from her desk and leads me toward the conference room in the middle of different offices and cubicles. She opens the door and gestures for me to step through. The chatter from the men in the room dies down when I enter and I barely look up at them, just trying to get my stuff on the table before I drop any of it. "I apologize for not being here sooner, I see you started without me." I say with a smile. "Not at all, you can't start the show without the star." A friendly sounding older gentleman says and I smile wider, turning on the charm, and finally look up to assess the room of men in front of me.
